Feith Indirectly Confirms British Memo

Yesterday I posted on the British memo that provides evidence that the Bush administration, and even the President directly, decided to make the Weapons of Mass Destruction a front for a war for regime change in Iraq. Interestingly, an article in the latest New Yorker, an interview with Douglas Feith, indirectly confirms what the British memo states(www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/050509fa_fact).

In the article Feith states about the Iraq War: "The main rationale [for the war] was not bassed on intelligence . . . It was known to anyone who read newspapers and knew history. Saddam had used nerve gas, he had invaded his neighbors more than once, he had attacked other neighbors, he was hostile to us [the United States?], he supported numerous terrorist groups. It's true that he didn't have a link that we know of to 9/11 . . . . But he did give safe haven to terrorists. . . . Given the ease, as everybody knows, with which one can reconstitute stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons if you have the capabilities which he had, I don'think the rationale for war hinged on the existence of stockpiles."

Here again is basically an admission that policy, not intelligence, drove the the Bush decision to invade Iraq. Intelligence was then shaped around the obvious "facts" and "history" to provide a public relations rationale for the war. This is exactly the same perspective as given by the British memo released last weekend.

I think what is most disturbing to me is that both the author of the article and Feith can only think in terms of the impact of the war on the United States. The decimation of Iraq and the Iraqi people does not even appear on the moral horizon. We mustn't forget that the decimation of the Iraqi people continues. This is not the "Culture of Life" that John Paul II talked about, but rather, the "Culture of Death."

Joe Conason at Salon has something relevant to add to this as well:

************

May 6, 2005 | Are Americans so jaded about the deceptions perpetrated by our own government to lead us into war in Iraq that we are no longer interested in fresh and damning evidence of those lies? Or are the editors and producers who oversee the American news industry simply too timid to report that proof on the evening broadcasts and front pages?

There is a "smoking memo" that confirms the worst assumptions about the Bush administration's Iraq policy, but although that memo generated huge pre-election headlines in Britain, its existence has hardly been mentioned here.

...

What the minutes clearly show is that Bush and Blair secretly agreed to wage war for "regime change" nearly a year before the invasion -- and months before they asked the United Nations Security Council to support renewed weapons inspections as an alternative to armed conflict. The minutes also reveal the lingering doubts over the legal and moral justifications for war within the Blair government.

But for Americans, the most important lines in the July 23 minutes are those attributed to Sir Richard Dearlove, the head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6, who in spy jargon is to be referred to only as "C." The minutes indicate that Sir Richard had discovered certain harsh realities during a visit to the United States that summer:

"C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC had no patience with the U.N. route ... There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action."

We've known this stuff all along. What will it take for people's ears to park up this time?

Juan Cole's analysis is spot-on, as usual:

Thank you for pointing out the hypocrisy of these so called proponents of the culture of life. I'm reminded of Bush's remarks during the Schiavo mess that we should always err on the side of life. I don't think that's exactly what's happening here, nor did it happen in Texas as Bush set records for executions. And thank you again for reminding us that suffering does not occur only on the American side of war, even though the MSM does all it can to cover the suffering caused by our actions. Reflecting upon the Rwandan genocide and the atrocities in Sudan these days, I keep remembering the phrase "never again". We said that at after the Holocaust. Then we said it after sitting by during genocides in Yugoslavia and Rwanda. I'm sure in a decade we'll same about Darfuf. What would it take for us to say that about these atrocities in Iraq. What is it that keeps we humans bound within the cycle of violence?

Sin. Self-centerednes. So again, sin.

(Though the complexity of the world probably figures into this as well.)

Dear
Greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this letter find you both excellent spirit and divine health.
As you know, India does not have the social services, medical and Food, care or help. There are many of widows, lepers and handicapped people and street orphans are living, they are really in need of Food, clothes, education and medical help certainly they are in need of love from some one.
As an evangelist in South India, I have taken upon myself the care of 50 orphan children and others with families who are too poor to be able to attend school or even enjoy regular meals.
Every orphan child has a heart breaking history. We find them in miserable conditions, having lost their parents in cyclones, floods, fire, accidents etc.? We bring them to us to take care of them. In the beginning it is beyond our ability to console them.? Then they slowly become accustomed to our love and care. Our aim is to bring them up in godliness and see that they are living witness to Jesus.
Unfortunately our resources are very limited and so we are not able to feed them regularly even two times a day. Some of them wake up at night crying because they are hungry. For lack of funds we are not able to give them sufficient food. At such times they get up from their plates with half-filled bellies. We not only have to feed them, but also provide them with shelter, clothes and bedding, send them to school and pay their medical bills. But it is very difficult for us to look after all these needs in these days of famine and soaring costs.
Please uphold our Ministry in your regular prayers. We have no affiliation with any organization and receive little regular support. We have a rented building in which we accommodate the orphans, but are not able to provide housing for the homeless poor. However, we do take to the streets with food and utensils so these people won't die of starvation. It costs very little to feed many people. ?
Our ministry consists of hunger, mockeries and persecutions. Our fellow pastors are very poor. They really have to depend on God. They have to look after their families as well as the Gospel out reach work. Most of the time they walk (for they have no bicycles) and proclaim the Gospel. ?
Regular and committed support would enable us to feed the parentless hungry children two times every day. Each orphan child needs $20 for a month. If you could raise funds for our orphanage we will be very thankful to you.? Please stretch out your hand of compassion to fill their bellies and wipe the tears from their cheeks. I await your reply with hope and faith.
I would welcome a visit from your representatives so that you can see for yourself what is being done in the name of Jesus.
Sincerely.

Dearest in Christ,

I am Mrs rita Solomon from Kuwait. I am married to ARCH DEACON John SOLOMON who worked with Kuwait embassy in Ivory Coast for nine years before he died in the year 2003.We were married for 25 years without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days.

Before his death we were both born again Christian.Since his death I decided not to remarry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of 2.5Million U.S. Dollars) in a Security Company here in Abidjan.

Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next Eight months due to cancer problem. Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to a church that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct herein. I want a church that will use this fund for orphanages, widows, propagating the word of God and to endeavor that the house of God is maintained.

The Bible made us to understand that "Blessed is the hand that giveth". I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don't want my husband's efforts to be used by unbelievers. I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly way. This is why I am taking this decision.

I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that "the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace".
I don't need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health hence the presence of my husband's relatives are around me always. I don't want them to know about this development.

With God all things are possible. As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the Security Company in Abidjan. I will also issue you an authorisation letter that will proove you the present beneficiary of this fund.
I want you and the church to always pray for me because the lord is my shephard. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that Wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and Truth.

Please always be prayerful all through your life.Contact me on my email any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing another church for this same purpose. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I Stated herein.
Hoping to receive your reply.
Remain blessed in the Lord.
Your's Sister In Christ
Mrs rita Solomon
