Home Again, Home Again
Jiggety, jig. It's Tuesday evening, and after over a week traveling England and France, returning to the US after an unintended day delay in Portugal, recovering jet lag, and a Samoan wedding, a routine slowly has emerged that opens time to blog again. I want to catch impressions up from the end of my Europe trip. Tonight downtown, I noticed the changes in the East Villaage streets make-up. The city pushed those who live on the streets around with Comicon coming into town; younger folk moved into the library area, and more and more people have left to "quieter" areas -- quieter from dislocation by the city and quieter in their fellow inhabitants that have lived on the streets, It was good being downtown again. We've also noticed that our distribution numbers have diminished in Mid-City. This could be a sign that the recession is loosing its grip on San Diego or it could be merely seasonal employment or people leaving the neighborhood. There is a shift as well in the line -- fewer working age males. As August turns to September it will be interesting to see how the trends continue. Once I left Manchester, it became very difficult to blog as we were on the move most of the time -- quite literally. I hope to give a rehash in the coming days what I saw and experienced in the trips to Dublin, London, Cambridge, Oxford, Lyon, France and Grenoble France, until the snafu that left us in Lisbon an extra day. The whole experience was very interesting, and I'm not sure that I have begun to process it well. But it is wonderful being home with Kathy -- I'm not a very good traveler, so it seems, and appreciate the stability of home and the creativity that comes with routine. Nazarene Theological College in Manchester was a wonderful place to live and read and learn. The setting is most appropriate for a life of study and reflection -- simple but accessible and collegial. I think that the tea times where a very wonderful time for the institution. The faculty were supportive but also instructive -- particularly Geordan Hammond taught me much. Today as I walked around Point Loma for a while, I was already able to share what I had learned. Leaving Manchester was made a bit easier by Rev. Dr. Dwight Swanson going with us as we moved to Dublin to visit the Chester Beatty Museum. I'll add more about this trip soon! Posted by johnwright at August 10, 2010 8:51 PM |
